Book sales for school visits
I offer a discount on my books to families and educators during my school visit. Please visit my Books page for a list and description of my titles.
I pre autograph all the books ordered and personalize them the day of my visit. When a student has a personalized/autographed book by the author or illustrator it becomes more significant to them and they are more likely to remember the Author or Illustrator Day with excitement. It also helps make the connection of how a book actually comes to be and who is involved, and their jobs; author, illustrator, editor, etc. It all adds more impact and meaning to the visit. I always bring my “made to color” bookmarks with my signature so no one goes away empty handed!
All of this “hoopla” around an author or illustrator school visit and their books really sends the message in a fun, interesting and inspiring way to children that BOOKS and LITERACY is important and FUN!!!
Helpful hints for a successful book sale!!!
1) Send a letter home to the parents explaining my visit along with the book order form. Give them a specific date when you need forms back.
2) Order your books through me approx. 4 weeks in advance of the scheduled visit, using your pre-order book forms to know the amount of books to order. I almost always have extra books on hand for those “straggler” orders, or day of visit orders, but the pre-selling should account for the majority of the books. 3) I will arrive with all of the books autographed. I will personalize them in any spare time I have or during lunch. If still not enough time I will stay after the last presentation! Some schools have the children who have purchased books line up and watch me personalize them. This works well if it is well organized. First you must allow for the time, secondly the children who did not order books should be filed out so there isn’t any sad feelings. This is where the book marks come in handy!!
4) Please have some one in charge of organizing the books by classroom to make it run smoothly.
You may choose to charge the regular price of the books and use the proceeds to defer the cost of my visit or as source of fundraiser. I personally like passing the savings on to the families. It’s a great opportunity to be able to purchase a hard cover book at a very reasonable cost.
